Race Report: Mini-tri 2012
30th January 2012
Sunday the 29th January saw the annual running of Trinity College Triathlon club's Mini-Tri. This event is primarily catered for beginners to the sport with distances of 200m Swim, 5km Bike, and 1.5km Run, which equates to one quarter of a Sprint Triathlon. This year's event raised funds for Trinity Access Programmes (TAP). TAP aims to increase participation in education by students from non-traditional backgrounds, to address educational disadvantage and to create a university campus that mirrors the diverse composition of Irish society.
Luckily the athletes, for the most bit, were sheltered from the heavy rain outside with both the Swim and Bike sections being held in TCD Sports Centre. Competitors were started in waves, with 4 athletes starting every 15 minutes. The winner of the men's category was Ciaran Brady, who blitzed the course in 20 minutes 15 seconds. Trinity Triathlon's Luke O'Callaghan-White came an excellent 2nd in a time of 21:30 with Danny Roe finishing a close 3rd in 21:56. The ladies category saw Jennifer O'Sullivan come out on top in a very impressive time of 25:09. In 2nd place was Tamara Ni hici in 26:22 and Trinity's own Alice Bentley rounding out the top 3 in a time of 29:20.
Former World Ironman Triathlon Champion, Peter Reid, once said "Triathlon becomes addictive. Once you've done it, you wanna do it again". After last Sunday, many of the competitors will have caught the 'Triathlon bug' and will have aspirations of completing their first Triathlon in the Summer. Judging from their performances they should have no problem at all achieving their goal. The club would like to thank Alan Campbell and the TCD Sports Centre staff for catering for the race and also TAP for providing some race marshals for the event.
